The dynamic and very talented Australian duo are ready to make their mark. Soon to release their debut album in the coming months, they spoke to Vibewire about what inspires the world of Lovers Electric.

It is impossible to classify Lovers Electric within one genre. Perhaps, if genres could have love offspring, it would be easier. The DNA of Lovers Electric's would include a fusion of funk, jazz, and 80’s electro-pop. Weeks away from their album launch Whatever You Want, you know Lovers Electric are on the verge of great things - great things which could very well include ushering in their own new genre.

Band members Eden Boucher and David Turley met as two-year-olds and reconnected years later, bonding over their love of music. Hailing from Adelaide, the duo founded the band in 2005. No strangers to the music scene in Europe and America, Lovers Electric have a wealth of music ‘cred’ in two of the most difficult music industries to crack. Listening to tracks off their forthcoming debut album, it’s obvious their travels and overseas experiences have given depth to their music and lyrics. Their growing national and international fan base means are finally getting the recognition they deserve, just as Australia begins to embrace the unique, dynamic pair.

Seeing Lovers Electrics perform, you know they are enjoying themselves nearly as much as you are. They have an ability to capture your attention and fill you with an overwhelming, inexplicable affection. Eden’s voice (imagine a sweeter, richer, less Aussie Missy Higgins) makes you want to hug your audience neighbour (although I probably wouldn’t recommend it). You soon find yourself intrigued by their catchy tunes and their emotional, intelligent lyrics. With quirky stage presence to boot, they may just be the only band I know who use a miniature red grand piano as an instrument.

Amidst their busy schedule, including various gigs around Sydney, moving house and the release of their album, Lovers Electrics kindly sat down for an interview.

How long have you known each other?

Eden: Apparently we played together when we were two years old! So, I guess we met then, but really we got to know each other when we were about 17 in Adelaide.

When did you form your band?

Eden: We were in a band in London for a couple of years with two friends and when that broke up we decided to do the duo thing and start Lovers Electric.

David: It was kind of the obvious thing for us to do next after the other band. I've always played and made music, I don't think I could do anything else! And when I first heard Eden's voice, well I just knew it was pretty special so roped her into recording on some electro stuff I was doing early on.

Your Influences?

David: I remember when I was 13 getting a CD from the library - because you could borrow them for free - and it was a live show of The Cure. I had no idea who they were but I liked it so I copied it to tape and then listened to that over and over again.

Eden: My Dad is a singer and he would bring home lots of female fronted bands, gently encouraging, and sometimes not so subtly. So, I grew up on Cyndi Lauper, the B52's & also The Cure as well - my older sister LOVED them so it was compulsory for the rest of us to like them too.

What is going to be your first single off Whatever You Want?

Eden: The first single off our new album will be 'Honey' which is being released in Australia in the last week of May. We made the video for this track in England, and David did all the editing on it, crazy amounts, something like 14 days straight looking at the screen. I'd take food and drink up to him to keep him going!

What is your favourite track on album and why?

David: 'Could This Be' probably is my favourite at the moment, just because it's so much fun to play live with the band, all of us on keyboards - a big 80's keyboard fest!

Eden: I like 'Whatever You Want', it got a facelift on the album, it used to be an almost country number, it's moody and I love the words.

LE.jpgYour favourite venue?

Eden: Last year we played with the 80's band O.M.D (Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark) and we played some great shows all over Europe. The first night we played with them was in Dublin at this old theatre and the vibe in the venue was amazing. I was so nervous!

David: The Hammersmith Apollo in London was pretty cool but the best venue would have to be the Berlin Zitadelle, it was an outside festival in the centre of this big old castle which had a huge moat around it.

Best moment on stage?

Eden: I like it when unexpected things happen, either we stuff up or someone drops a tray full of glasses, anything that keeps me as a performer on my feet. It reminds me to take it all lightly as well as being all passionate and intense about it. It’s great to not get too caught up in your own thing for me.

What is the story behind your mini piano?

Eden: We found our beloved Mini Grand (as we like to call it...) in an op shop in the North of England, we had £20 to our name at the time and it cost £3, so we thought for a little longer than usual, piano or food?? And we went for the piano in the end.

The first CD I ever bought was…

David: Oh I hate this question! Ha! You see the first album I ever listened to was Grover's Sesame Street disco which was cool but the first album I bought was Daryl Braithwaite... yeah I was into the mushy stuff at 11!

Eden: Frente 'Marvin The Album', I played that tape ‘til it died.

Right now, my music crush is ...

Eden: I'm a massive electronic fan, so anything that makes me dance suits me right now.

David: Probably it's a toss up between The Editors and Gary Numan...

If I wasn’t a musician, I would be:

David: A steam train driver!

Eden: Well, I'm a designer when I'm not being a musician. Although that's on the back burner at the moment. I love sewing fancy thing.

The ultimate ‘on the road’ snack is:

Eden: Cup of tea and a biscuit, never fails me.

David: That 70% Lindt dark chocolate

LEarticle.jpgFavourite on stage outfit?

Eden: Red dresses, I love red dresses

David: I only have one shirt and tie...

Advice for aspiring young Australian artists?

Eden: Go see what's going on in some other parts of the world with music, it's amazing how it inspires you and opens up ideas. And just do it! Go for it! You're going to be way more excited about what you are doing than anyone else, so be the driving force behind it.

David: And if anyone says to you 'don't give up your day job.... well... quit your day job that day!

Lovers Electric release their first single Honey this week. Their ability to capture moments in time and put a tune and lyrics to an emotion is a rare and beautiful thing. Whatever You Want out in July through Marmot Records and Sony BMG, is a tangible representation of Lovers Electric’s musical talents and passion.

Lovers Electric play the Sandringham Hotel in Sydney every Wednesday night this May. Check out their official website www.loverselectric.com, and sample their tracks via MySpace at www.myspace.com/loverselectric.
