Spanish mania has well and truly hit Sydney. Bodega, Surry Hills, defines this trend with mouth-watering tapas, delicious wines and a fabulous ambiance.

Viva Espana! Spanish mania has galvanized the global dining scene, from London to New York, from Hong Kong to Sydney. Tapas bars seem to be the new “it” places to be and the Spanish philosophy of sharing lots of small plates or tapas is being widely embraced.
Bodega seamlessly weaves this ritual of drinks and food into an iconic gem of a bar nestled in the backstreets of Surry Hills. Tiny and vibrant would well describe this intimate area. Seating a mere 42 people helps recreate the atmosphere of a bustling bar in Spain; and is hopefully a taste of more good things to come with the introduction of NSW’s new licensing laws.
The staff are stellar, completely relaxed, despite the surrounding chaos as people flood the tiny restaurant in search of a table or a mere bar stool. They are also happy to help decipher anything on the menu and charmingly guide the ignorant through the Spanish and South American wine list. The selection of wines will leave any lover of Spanish or South American varieties thoroughly satisfied. It is innovative and wide-ranging. From Chilean Pinot Noir to a classic Reserva Rioja, the list is sure to impress ~ yet is still manageable enough for the inexperienced to navigate.
The food fits perfectly into this colorful little oasis. The plates are small yet full of flavor and thoughtfully presented. The Spanish stock favorites – jamon, manchego cheese, olives and chorizo – are traditional and wonderful to snack upon whilst sipping on a few glasses of vino before deciding on the next wave of tapas. The more substantial plates are beautiful and interesting. Unique ingredients and fascinating flavors result in dishes of greater depth and imagination than the basic Spanish cuisine would suggest. The wagu tongue and sea scallops simply melt in the mouth, the two diverse flavors marrying perfectly upon the palate. The crispy fried prawns are completely addictive. The lamb, tender and juicy - a lovely contrast to the fresh, crisp quinoa. Even the rustic and simple tortilla is given a slight make over with the delightful addition of caramelized onions and taleggio cheese.
The desserts and coffees continue to keep apace with the high standard, although it is hard to pass up a simple cheese plate served on a quaint wooden chopping board. Bodega is heaven for anyone who enjoys a few drinks, with lots of nibbles in a relaxed and colorful setting. Be prepared to wait for a table though. The place heaves with people, providing lots of business for the pub next door. However the wait is well worth it. Although not necessarily light on the pocket, it is most rewarding.
