On September 6 India was forgiven its sins of poor international citizenship, or rather, for its steadfast refusal to sign both the Non-Proliferation Treaty and the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. The 45-nation Nuclear Suppliers Group gave the nod to a controversial US-India nuclear deal making India the only country to be provided access to nuclear fuel and technology, despite not being a signatory to these agreements. Previously in 1974 amid international disapproval, India tested what it formally called its ‘Peaceful Nuclear Explosive’ and informally code-named its ‘Smiling Buddha’. There were more trials in 1998, again amid much international tut-tutting, until India placed itself under a voluntary moratorium on testing. However with this waiver it appears India is now a welcome member of the nuclear club.
