SCHOOL HOLIDAY WORKSHOPS

Young Filmmakers runs extensive school holiday workshop programs in digital film production during the January, April, July and October school holidays. The three-day intensive workshops enable participants to write, act, shoot, light, direct, edit and produce their own films. Participants will join an established collective of over 200 young Sydney filmmakers and become part of the Young Filmmakers community, receiving regular eNews updates and invites to screenings, special events and online forums.

An added touch of glamor and excitement for the school holiday workshops saw participants making films for Sony TropJnr and other films screened internationally in Texas, Berlin, San Francisco, New York, Vancouver, Indonesia, Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong and of course throughout Australia.

FEES

All workshop fees are heavily subsidized through Metro Screen and the Department of Family, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs to ensure greater access for young people to film industry equipment and training. Average workshop fee is $295, but may be more or less depending on the type of course. Free workshop placement is available to young people from lower-income families.

 
CHANNEL FREE SPECIAL PROJECTS

Channel Free’s special projects are dedicated to helping marginalised, disadvantaged or ‘at risk’ youth gain access to digital film technology; empowering them to tell their own stories and get their voices heard in the wider community. Projects run over a period of three to six months and provide free intensive film training, mentorship with experienced professionals and practical filmmaking experience.

 
In 2007 Channel Free worked in co-production with Twenty10 youth support to produce a short drama, ‘Stray’ which has already screened at over fifteen international film festivals, been packaged as a DVD resource for young people and picked up a North American distributor!

 
Involvement in a Channel Free project enables young people to develop their creativity, self-confidence, teamwork and technical skills in an inspiring professional environment. Filmmaking allows them to express themselves through a medium that transcends barriers in academic ability, literacy, language and cultural background.

SUCESSES

Metro Screen is a proud supporter of both Tropfest and TropJr and in 2008 the award winners included Guy Verge Wallace who won TropJr with his film “Poor Joshua”. Guy has been a regular on Metro Screen’s Young Filmmakers workshops. In 2006 Harry Greenwood took out the Tropfest Young Talent Award.
 
Many productions made through Channel Free’s regular school holiday workshops have gone on to be screened internationally including Texas, Berlin, San Francisco, New York, Vancouver and of course throughout Australia. Including 11 films selected to make up an entire program for the BREWHAHA short film festival and eight films were selected in the Cinema Texas, Cinemakids 2006 program.
 
Stray produced by Channel Free screens at the Melbourne Queer Film Festival and premiered at the 2007 Mardi Gras Film Festival North American distribution Frameline has distribution rights in North America (The United
States, Canada, Mexico and each country's territories) for a period of five years. Accepted to screen at the prestigious NewFest - The 19th New York Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, & Transgender Film Festival, May 31-June 10. DE JA VAMP and FATE -- were selected for the Cinemakids 2007 screening program. The selection committee unanimously agreed that these films should be in our program, and we sincerely hope that our screening of them will bring your students the recognition they deserve as up-and-coming young filmmakers. The Cinemakids screenings took place on September 15 and 16 in Austin, Texas
 
 
2nd WORDLESS International Short Film Festival in Hyderabad – INDIA screened the following film in 2007 ‘Panic’, ‘Pause’, ‘Hush’ and ‘Disconnected’. The Australian based Cinewest and ICYMAN (International Children and Youth Multimedia Access Network) conceived Wordless International Short Film Festival as a global audience development strategy.
