Comedy is a funny thing. However, it doesn't normally fall under the theatre banner. In other words, you don't go to see comedy expecting to watch actors playing characters but rather to see personalities performing exaggerated versions of them-selves. Comedians can't hide behind a character like an actor can and are therefore under increased pressure to use their wit and spontaneity to keep an audience engaged. As a result many comedians overcompensate by assaulting an audience with their personality. The space is kept alive with their own noise, because in comedy, silence is death.

Charlie Pickering is a different kind of comedian. His brand of comedy is a blend of story telling, unassuming charm and a genuine gratitude toward his audience. He seems happy enough that people turned up let alone enjoyed the show. From the moment Charlie comes on stage he has the audience formed into rival battalions facing off from opposite sides of the theatre. With a list of his favourite wars (no really he does) written in a notebook and an unhealthy obsession with the history channel his quirky charm shines. Charlie has the ability to embellish the truth in a way that leaves you thinking 'No way! That didn't really happen." His earnestness leaves you in doubt…"Did it?"

Charlie comedic technique is almost too perfect. It is easy to see how much preparation he puts into his material. However, this is offset by the chaotic way his mind works; you can almost see the twisted little gears working. But the end product is fresh and original. Once an unseasoned talent, he is now starting to settle into the mantle of comic genius and this is reflected in this, his latest offering. Impractical Jokes is a focused and engaging show that isn't rolling in the aisles funny but it will leave your cheeks hurting from all the smiling you'll do.
