Greg Shapley’s new media gallery has been mistaken for a brothel and an illegal satellite TV hook up center, amongst other things. Sandwiched somewhere between a tailor, performing arts school, bakery and tool shop in Sydney’s inner-west, the experimental art space sticks out, just a little bit. And despite the large stenciled sign visible from the road and the thick black gaffa tape announcing ‘EXHIBITION NOW ON – PLEASE COME IN!!’ on the white roller shutter door, the space is still a source of local confusion.

These days you don’t have to shave your head, have an addiction or do anything remotely illegal to be sent to rehab. Comic Artist Rehab mixes bloggery with art and is an intensive one month stint for illustrators, animators and comic artists that aims to get them back into artistic shape and drawing to regular deadlines. For some it’s a chance for creative redemption having been sullied by the big bad corporate world, whilst for others it’s a way of overcoming general slackness.

She had painted each black letter the size of an adult foot for maximum effect. ‘Dear Karin,’ one read, ‘Everything you have done so far has been perfect. You could even try 20% less hard.’ Signed, photographed and posted on her website, it’s a personal example of assignment #63 – make an encouraging banner – and part of Miranda July’s (writer, director, performance artist, general indie darling) ongoing venture, a collective Internet project called Learning to Love You More. First-time grocery shopping with a new flatmate is akin to your debut visit to the video store with a new boyfriend. Everything seems entirely normal until you meet, somewhere between ‘Cult Classics’ and the ice-cream freezer, only to see that he is clutching Reservoir Dogs, looking disdainfully at your pick (When Harry met Sally). In a small and darkened room quite late at night, English comedian Daniel Kitson settles down in his wooden chair, clears his throat dramatically and begins to read ‘the greatest love story of all time’ from a small orange notebook. His friend Gavin Osborn sits alongside him, battered guitar in hand, ready to fill in pauses of this epic love story (‘a tale of towering courage, of hearts aching, swollen and broken, of battles, won and lost, both romantic and land based,’ reads the synopsis, ‘…and flapjacks’) with Flight of the Conchords type folk songs about a boyish first love gone wrong. It’s the perfect bedtime story for adults – wildly imaginative, insightful, charming and very very funny. By Sonya Gee.

Experimenta’s latest exhibition that is now touring nationally proves that you’re never too old to play. But this is not your average playground up-sized for adults. Forget the monkey bars, swing set and slippery dip and get ready for shadow play, ATMs that talk back, stop-motion films and all manner of new media art designed to take you outside of the everyday and back into the realm of fun. Sonya Gee asks Experimenta’s Artistic Director Liz Hughes about Experimenta Playground and about recovering the lost art of play.
