There's plenty of stuff going on to keep your busy hands and minds occupied...

  •  The City of Sydney is holding a series of short courses for budding D.I.Y-ers. These include 'Design Your Own Comics and Zines' - a four session course held for 15-26 year olds from the 29th April to 20th May and 'A Cut Above Street Art' - a seven week session for 15-26 year olds between 28th April to 16th June.   • The iconic Melbourne bookstore Readings is celebrating its 40th birthday by publishing an anthology in 2009. Submit your previously unpublished short story (2500-5000 words in length, open theme) for the chance to have your work featured next to prominent and emerging Australian Writers.   • Send your short stories, poetry and images through to enquiries@pageseventeen.com.au  for the chance to be included in Issue Six of the magazine. Submissions close 30th June.


  • Something further left field: Extempore is a bi-annual journal which explores art and writing inspired by jazz and improvised music. This is your chance to make like the Beat's, go to www.extempore.com.au  for more info.


  • The Emerging Writers' Festival is coming up between the 9th and 11th of May. There are loads of events happening around Melbourne aimed especially at you - the up and coming writers of Australia. Check out the program at www.emergingwritersfestival.org.au  and get involved.


  •  Following on immediately from the Emerging Writers' Festival is The Next Wave Festival. Running between 15th and 31st of May, there is a myriad of events, workshops and presentations aimed at exposing our best new talent. The program can be found at www.nextwave.org.au
